On October 24, 1964, Northern Rhodesia officially became the Republic of Zambia, ending years of struggle between the ruling British and the African nationalists. Dr. Kenneth Kaunda became the nation’s first president, and spoke of the new republic’s “task of building a nation founded on respect for all people of all races, all colours and all religions“.
Today, 48 years later, Zambia has a reputation for political stability and a relatively efficient, transparent government, and the fact that Zambia has been peaceful and generally trouble-free, is a draw for many visitors.
Zambia is the continent’s biggest copper producer and home to the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The Victoria Falls – also known locally as the ”Smoke that Thunders” – are to be found along the Zambezi River and have UNESCO World Heritage status. Victoria Falls are one of the country’s many natural features which have been enticing a growing number of tourists, along with the wide variety of wildlife to be found in large game parks.
Livingstone also hosts a ground-breaking and globally recognized wildlife conservation programme, where lions are released back into the wild. Zambia’s Lion Release Project aims to provide a solution to the rapidly decreasing lion population by working towards the release of wild-born offspring of captive bred lions into appropriate National Parks and Reserves throughout Africa.
In addition to this wildlife volunteer projects, there are medical volunteer opportunities, where volunteers have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the local community through a specially structured medical programme. Or if being a teaching volunteer or sports coach is more appealing to you, Zambia offers volunteers the opportunity to not only help teach and coach local children, keeping them off the streets and helping them to have a more positive future, but be involved in some very worthwhile community development projects too.
