Home or Away at Christmas?

Travelling abroad at Christmas
Enjoy a slower pace of life at Christmas

Ooh, controversial!!

I have asked quite a few people now, whether they would rather be home or away at Christmas, and people feel pretty strongly either way. All of the children I have spoken to have preferred to be at home – they don’t want Father Christmas getting lost with his sack of toys – but there is quite a mix of opinions from other generations, although the reasons can be very simple.

So it seems, the reasons for those who prefer to stay at home:-

Cos all my family are around, and it just feels right

Cos we don’t have to pack everything up

Cos I love waking up in my own bed

Celebrate Christmas by meeting new friends

Cos I’m at home and it’s my house, and there is a homey feel

Cos I feel all tucked up and cosy, it’s cold outside, but warm inside

Cos I know where everything is and I have everything around me

Cos I can make as much mess as I want

Cos it can be expensive to travel at Christmas

Cos I have time and can go shopping, or iceskating etc

Cos I can see all my friends, and my family can come to visit me

Cos the house looks different and beautiful with all the Christmas decorations up

Cos it’s tradition, it’s what I’ve always done, and it would be weird not to be here

Cos the festivities are just better at home

Those who prefer to be away from home:-

Cos it’s always cold at home and I love to feel the heat in another country

Cos there are so many magical places that are even more beautiful at Christmas, so I’d love to see them at their best

Cos it’s a change of scenery

Experience something different this Christmas

Cos I don’t want to be on my own at home

Cos there are so many people much worse off than me, that I’d love to help at this time of year

Cos I can experience different cultures and see how other nationalities celebrate Christmas

Cos it’s a change in routine – I would never dream of swimming in the ocean at home, but away, this could be the ‘norm’

Cos I can get away from the family – sometimes there can be an emotional obligation to stay

Cos it’s a fantastic opportunity to travel as a family with teenage children, as we rarely see each other all together, without the technological distractions

Cos there is always so much pressure and stress at home, so I like to be away

Cos I get two weeks holiday so it’s the only time I can get away

Cos I still keep some of the Christmas traditions when I travel, so I don’t completely forget about home

Cos it’s such a big wide world and so many countries to explore, that I always take any opportunity to travel, any where, any time….

Where would you rather be for Christmas – home or away?

And what is your biggest motivator for that decision? I’d love to know…….
