Helping the Sun Bears!

28 Apr 2015 / 0 Comments / in Animals, Asia, Bear Bile Farming, Borneo, Sun Bears/by Gemma

enrichmentCalling all Volunteer to help the Sun Bears!

Sun bears are the smallest members of the bear family and one of the cutest young animals in the world.  Sadly their numbers are rapidly decreasing in South-East Asia but here is an opportunity to spend time working with these bears in Borneo.  Volunteers to this project can spend either two or four weeks at the Sun Bear Sanctuary, or follow two weeks at the Sanctuary with two weeks at the “Corridor of Life” – a brand new high priority conservation area.

Both these locations offer a safe haven for rescued sun bears and it is exciting to assist the Malaysian bear keepers to work towards rehabilitating these wonderful animals back into the wild.  Volunteers, while helping to improve the conditions of the bears, also help to improve understanding of conservation through work with the local village schools.  Itis vital that young people begin to understand the importance of conservation as they will be the custodians of the future.

Borneo is a fascinating country and there will be a one-off chance to trek through the rainforests and learn something of the mystery of this country.

Volunteers will get the chance to learn some Malay as well as improving the spoken English of the Malaysian keepers.

There will be time off during the time in Borneo to explore Sandakan and the beautiful surrounding areas and on the very last day all volunteers will become tourists and will visit the famous Orang-Utan Rehabiliation Centre at Sepilok to observe feeding time – again – a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The last night will be spent in a local hotel with fellow volunteers – watching the sunset for the last time while enjoying a few drinks and some fine food. What a way to end this fantastic volunteering experience!

Full details of this volunteer opportunity can be found on the link below and if you are interested in joining please do contact gemma@amanzitravel.co.uk
