Camping or glamping in Africa?

Camping, Glamping or Safari Lodges – which would you prefer?

Glamping, or glamorous camping, is a growing worldwide phenomenon that combines camping with the luxury and amenities of a hotel or home. It’s also called boutique camping, luxury camping, posh camping or comfy camping, glamping allows travelers to experience nature without the hassle of finding camp space, carrying their tents, and erecting and taking down their own tents.

Kichwa Tembo, in Kenya’s Masai Mara, is one such stunning African glamping experience. Imagine a classic safari interior, illuminated by soft lantern light, open up onto the majestic African landscapes. In the luxury tents at the Kichwe Tembo Tented Camp, they offer an en suite bathroom with stone shower, flagstone floors, soft lighting and separate w.c.

Spacious private verandas provide a shady viewpoint onto the magnificent grasslands or the wooded banks of the Sabaringo River and the passing wildlife. Hammocks strung in the grounds or around the sparkling swimming pool, invite you for an afternoon nap.

At Botswana’s Chobe National Park, the guest accommodation offers spacious, comfortable mobile tents, each with twin or double beds, ensuite bathroom, flush w.c., and al fresco bucket shower (hot water delivered upon request). Tents are fully netted and insect proof. There are also further guest areas, all of which have breath-taking views, overlooking endless, game-filled plains, which comprise comfortable tents for dining, meeting for a pre-dinner drink, or just for whiling the time away between safaris with a good book and frosted beer or glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

Old fashioned camping

Or are you more tempted by doing it yourself a bit more, and enjoying the challenge of erecting your own tent each evening, collecting your own firewood, and even participating in the cooking of the shared dinner?

Many of the Overland Trips exploring Africa, are camping trips, with spacious 2-person tents with sewn in ground sheets and with a separate fly sheet provided too.  Most organised campsites usually have hot water showers, plus extra facilities such as a bar or swimming pool.

Occasionally, when it is impossible to drive any further or when there is no local campsite available, it may be necessary to bush camp.  The overland vehicles are completely self-sufficient for this and camping out in the middle of the African bush, under the stars, can be a memorable experience.

Or perhaps a notch up from camping, but not quite 5 star glamping, are the semi-permanent tents or lodges, which are a perfect mix of practicality and comfort. These safari style permanent tents or twin rooms, generally have en-suite facilities and self catering facilities.

So, whichever option you prefer, glamping, safari lodges or good old fashioned camping, there is definitely something for you in Africa. Or even a combination of them all.

A truly life changing experience, working on wildlife and community volunteering projects in Africa over eight years ago, convinced Gemma Whitehouse to give up her job as a Marketing Manager for an international organisation and use her skills and expertise to set up a company that would offer others the same amazing opportunities with a service second to none - thus Amanzi Travel was born.
