Are you an experienced vet, or are you studying to be a vet, and enjoy a good challenge? If you are looking for a veterinary experience of a different kind, have a sense of adventure and a passion for animals and conservation, then this could be your perfect veterinary volunteer project.
Brand new project
This is a brand new, unique experience for specialized volunteers, to help care for some of Africa’s stunning wildlife, within the field of vet medicine.
Being a veterinary volunteer on the Noah’s Ark Veterinary Care Volunteer program, offers you the opportunity to run the day-to-day activities as our wildlife veterinarian at this sanctuary. You will be working in the field, treating and handling wildlife as well as hand-raised animal orphans. Much of the work can be related to wildlife industries, such as game capture and relocation, thereby maximizing your exposure to surrounding human wildlife conflict, sanctuary care and the wildlife’s natural habitat.
Noah’s Ark Wildlife Sanctuary
Noah’s Ark is the oldest and longest running wildlife rehabilitation centre in Namibia, and has been established for more than 30 years, with volunteers from all over the world working to make a difference.
Its aim is to give animals a second chance at life – and to this end it endeavors to rehabilitate and release back into the wild, as many as possible. However, it also provides a life-long home for the animals that will not survive in the wild.
By joining Noahs Ark as a wildlife vet you will not only contribute to the saving of animal lives, but you will get the insight to conserve Africa’s stunning wildlife on a larger scale.
Over the years the numbers of lions, cheetah and other species have plummeted and the rehabilitation project hopes to make a real difference by re-establishing these big cats back into the wildlife of Namibia.
You will experience a different kind of medical practice, and retrieve unique knowledge about animals and diseases only common in Namibia and Africa.
Example work that you may actively take part in:
- Wildlife research, where you will be a part of the darting of a wild animal that is about to be released, or that needs an annual checkup
- Helping to care for sick, injured or orphaned wildlife
- Retrieving blood from the Africa Wild Dogs for DNA testing etc.
- Deworming and de- ticking of the animals
- providing medication assistance to locals for the animals eg vaccinations
